Where did all the days go? We’ve had quite a few sea days so there hasn’t been to much to write about, but we spent a day on a catamaran in Barbados and there was some day drinking starting at 10 am. Yes, one could have written about that if one had the sharp mind required to write with a modicum of intelligence and wit. One did not. See the picture below.
We were supposed to have a day at Devil’s Island, the notorious French penal colony, but rough seas prevented us from docking. We got to see it from our deck, but we really, really (really!) wanted to get off the boat to escape the rolling motion which was….unpleasant. So, 3 straight days of rolling seas. Not violent in any way, but enough to induce a low level of nausea that was really tiresome.
We’re in South America for the first time! We will take a tender in to the small city of Icoaraci just to be off the boat. Dry land! Well….land, anyway. There isn’t much to do other than walk around and try to look inconspicuous. All of the action is in the city of Belem, but…that’s a long ride in an un-air conditioned bus, a minimum of an hour each way if there isn’t traffic. There is. I ain’t no stinkin’ geographer (sorry, Jeff), but we’re 1 degree south of the equator sitting in the mouth of the Amazon river during the hottest part of the year. I doubt there is enough deodorant/anti-perspirant in the entire continent to get us on that bus. So, we’ll walk around next to the pier until we drown in our sweat or are eaten by mosquitoes.
